We are proud to share that Michael Watercutter, our Conservation Agronomist and a fourth‑generation Ohio farmer, has been named a 2026 Ohio Master Farmer Award recipient. This honor recognizes individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership, innovation, and stewardship in agriculture, qualities Michael exemplifies in every aspect of his work.
“Soil is what you’re farming and what you own. We need to protect that and keep it alive for the next generation. That means keeping soil in place by reducing wind and runoff erosion, and building soil health with cover crops and no‑till. These practices improve water quality, boost infiltration, and strengthen nutrient cycling to support a healthier cash crop.”

Connection to Agriculture
The Watercutter family has farmed the same land since 1895, and Michael joined his father on the operation in 2009 after graduating from college. Since then, the farm has experienced a period of remarkable growth and transformation. The cattle enterprise has expanded from 40 to 240 head annually, adding new facilities to support animal care and nutrient management, and growing a successful direct‑to‑consumer beef business with plans for further expansion in 2026.
Leading Through Conservation and Innovation
What sets Michael apart is the way he blends tradition with forward‑thinking conservation. His farm has been fully no‑till since 2018, with 100% cover crop adoption since 2019. His regenerative farming system includes diverse cover crop mixes, planting green, roller‑crimp termination, and reduced fertilizer inputs guided by soil health testing. These practices have improved soil structure, reduced costs, and strengthened the long‑term resilience of the farm.
A Trusted Voice for Farmers
Michael’s leadership extends well beyond his own fields. In his role with American Farmland Trust and Mercer Landmark, he supports farmers across the region to advance soil health, cover crop adoption, and regenerative practices. He has led educational events, supported on‑farm research, and presented at conferences nationwide. His ability to connect with producers and translate complex agronomic concepts into practical, real‑world solutions has made him a valued and trusted advisor.
Service that Strengthens the Agricultural Community
Beyond his role as a Conservation Agronomist, Michael serves the agriculture community as:
- A board member of the Shelby County Soil & Water Conservation District
- A Beef Trustee for the Shelby County Beef & Dairy Association
- A founding board member of Farmers Advocated for Conservation, a farmer-led group launched in 2025 to support conservation efforts statewide
- A leader whose contributions have earned him recognition as the 2022 Conservation Agronomist MVP from Truterra/Land O’Lakes and a 2023 Field to Market Trusted Advisor honoree
